Mostly Sunny, which earned Huang Xiaoming the Best Actor title at the 26th Shanghai International Film Festival's Golden Goblet Awards, will be released across domestic theaters on Saturday.
For his role, actor Huang gained 15 kilograms to portray Wu You, a childish man in his 40s desperate to save his mother from pancreatic cancer. Wu You places his faith in a fraudster who claims that basking in the sunshine can create a miracle. His older brother, Wu Di, a doctor, chooses to hide the truth from him and instead relies on modern medicine. Their story reveals that, in the end, the true remedy for the family is love.
The fraudster, who calls himself Doctor Cai, is portrayed by the acclaimed director Jia Zhangke. In the movie, Jia's character wears the director's trademark sunglasses and delivers his English lines in the accent of Shanxi, Jia's own home province.
In addition to the Shanghai festival's accolade, Huang has also been nominated for Best Actor at the upcoming 38th Golden Rooster Awards, which will be announced in Xiamen, Fujian province, on Nov 15.
