Meng Boshen is known for big installations and sculptures on which he smudges, using pencils, all over the surface, evoking awe and thought among the audience.

Recently, he "smudged" a cold storage not only turning into an art space but filled the freezer, covering some 4,000 square meters, in Hohhot, Inner Mongolia autonomous region, with his signature smudged works, at a solo exhibition, Observing Reality Through Smears.

The exhibition also inaugurated the freezer-turned-art museum, Xibei Museum, on June 15.

The works on show concentrate on the evolution of Meng's critical thinking on material, rules of nature and modernism.

Since 2007, Meng has explored ways to turn children's drawing and covering things with pencils into an art venture, to reflect on the passing of time and changing realities.

The dark, smeared surface of the installations creates a chemistry between the used components and structures inside and outside the storage.
